While the above synopsis shadows the Lewis family secret to maintain a sense of mystery and intrigue, it’s imperative potential viewers have a cursory understanding of what happened to the Lewis twins before diving into the documentary.

As reported by TIME and depicted in Tell Me Who I Am, Alex and Marcus are survivors of sexual abuse perpetrated by their mother and were neglected by their father. As such the movie goes into detail about the ways in which the Lewis brothers were treated by their parents.

It’s an intense documentary with sensitive subject matter including Alex and Marcus working through Marcus’ decision to keep the truth from Alex when he was the only one who could have told him they’d been abused.

Betrayal, healing, and the importance of telling the truth are key components of Alex and Marcus’ story as are the darker elements that shaped their childhood and changed their relationship.
