What is The Tomorrow War about?

The Tomorrow War was directed by Chris McKay, who also helmed The Lego Batman Movie. He directed the action flick from a screenplay written by Zach Dean, who is known for writing the script for the crime drama Deadfall. Alongside Pratt is a solid lineup, including Sam Richardson, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Edwin Hodge, Mike Mitchell, and Keith Powers.

The 2021 feature follows a family man played by Pratt who is drafted into a war that hasn’t happened yet, and in order to survive, he must confront his past. An epic battle that humankind is losing is taking place in the future, and they are so desperate they head to the past for assistance in ensuring the survival of the human race.

There are plenty of reasons people would want to see this exhilarating ordeal. It's filled with entertaining action sequences, Pratt and many other actors give outstanding performances, it has amazing special effects, and an intriguing and original plot. What's not to like about this film?

Here's what critics had to say about The Tomorrow War via Rotten Tomatoes:

"The Tomorrow War is the surprise of the season, a stuffed-to-the-gills battle between evil aliens and terrified humans."

Randy M from San Jose Mercury News

"Action-packed and family-centric in a solidly commercial way, the pic may be missing that certain something that would have made it huge in theaters, but it will be plenty entertaining as an addition to Amazon's streaming menu."

John DeFore from Hollywood Reporter

"At its core, this is just a really good monster movie. All the same, there's a touch of beauty to it."

Mick L from San Francisco Chronicle

Due to the major success of the first film, a sequel was announced to be in development. Back in April 2023, while promoting his new film Renfield, McKay revealed in an interview with Uproxx that The Tomorrow War 2 was still in the works and that a script was in the process of being written. So, you might want to get started on watching the first film soon if you haven't already.

While it is unfortunate that Netflix doesn't carry The Tomorrow War, subscribers should recall that there are many other movies fans of the genre combo will enjoy on the streaming platform. Other sci-fi action flicks they should check out on Netflix include Project Power, What Happened to Monday, Outside the Wire, Code 8 and Code 8: Part II.
