Is Fear Street Part 1: 1994 scary?

It’s our time to shine, horror fans! The first movie in the Fear Street trilogy has dropped on Netflix in the early hours this morning, and this one is definitely worth the watch. The series is based on R.L. Stine’s books of the same name, however these are for mature audiences with an R-rating.

How scary is Fear Street Part 1: 1994?

As you can probably tell from the trailer and the fact that the movies are based on books by R.L. Stine, there’s definitely a juvenile feel to Fear Street Part 1: 1994. The movie follows high schoolers who are dealing with relationship troubles and all of the normal teenage conflicts. There’s an innocence to protagonist Deena (Kiana Madeira), who is heartbroken over her girlfriend Sam (Olivia Scott Welch). There’s also Deena’s little brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.), who spends time chatting on the web and crushing on Deena’s best friend Kate (Julia Rehwald).

Despite this premise, however, I would say that Fear Street Part 1: 1994 does actually get a little bit scary for most audiences. The group of friends is hunted by the town’s urban legend witch, Sarah Fier, along with her undead henchmen. That alone could be enough to scare some viewers. There are also jump scares and multiple murders which are all shown on screen.

The movie does not skimp out on the blood and gore, as the henchmen kill off multiple characters and their deaths are pretty graphic. There is one scene in which someone dies by their head being shoved into what appears to be a bread slicer or meat grinder. Everything is shown, which I honestly wasn’t expecting while watching!

There are also multiple stabbings and a drowning, along with chase scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The ending is particularly chilling as a character appears possessed and stabs someone else before writhing and growling on the floor.

For me personally, I was not scared by Fear Street Part 1: 1994, but I’m also someone who loves horror movies. It could definitely be considered scary for many viewers. I would say it’s more action-packed and gory than scary, but there are elements of horror throughout the entire film.

Is Fear Street Part 1: 1994 okay for kids?

It’s a resounding no when it comes to Fear Street Part 1: 1994 being okay for children to watch. The film is rated R and for good reason. As mentioned earlier, there are multiple murders that are shown on screen and some images that might be frightening for young audiences.

There’s also some profanity used throughout the movie as well as sexual content with heavy making out and the suggestion of more.
