Attention, Netflix lovers! The latest new release on the streaming service is the first film in the Fear Street trilogy, and this one is not for the faint-hearted. Fear Street Part 1: 1994 debuted today, and it promises awesome horror and many kills. The series is based on the R.L. Stine books of the same name, but this Netflix adaptation is not for kids. The movies are rated R, and for good reason.

Those who aren’t fond of blood and gore in movies might want to stay away from the Fear Street trilogy, where murders are frequent. The first movie follows a group of friends in the fictional town of Shadyside who are tormented by a witch and her henchmen. Protagonist Deena (Kiana Madeira) not only has to face her girlfriend Sam (Olivia Scott Welch) moving to a new town and onto a new relationship, but also the fact that she’s being targeted by the town’s witch, Sarah Fier.

Deena still loves Sam and will do anything in her power to save her, even when her friends think they should give up. Though Sam is hesitant to rekindle any feelings for Deena, it’s impossible for her to deny that she’s still in love with her, too. Because of their bond, the friend group goes through multiple hurdles trying to take down Sarah Fier and the undead. As you’d expect, not everything goes as planned and the group decides in order to save Sam, she’ll have to die first.

Twisted, I know.

What happens to Sam in Fear Street Part 1: 1994?

Fortunately, Sam does not die in Fear Street Part 1: 1994. However, that doesn’t mean it’s smooth sailing for this character. After Deena and her friends decide they have to kill Sam and bring her back to life, they head to an empty grocery store to do the deed. The plan is to have Sam take a bunch of pills and overdose, only for the group to use epinephrine to bring her back. Yes, it’s a risky plan, and it doesn’t work.

As she swallows the pills, Sam starts throwing them up, ultimately failing the plan in place. By that time, the undead henchmen have entered the grocery store and start to go after the group. Sadly, both Kate and Simon are killed, and Kate’s death is without a doubt the most gruesome of the film. Be on the lookout for that one.

Deena quickly then has the idea she’s going to drown Sam in a tank of lobsters, which does end up working. When Sam officially loses life, the henchmen give up and the witch’s curse is over — or so they think. Now, Deena and Josh have to bring Sam back with CPR which, thankfully, does end up working.

Fast forward to some of the final scenes and it appears all is okay again for Deena, Josh, and Sam. But, of course, nothing can ever be that easy in a horror movie! In a twist move, Sam becomes possessed and stabs Deena. It’s a chilling scene considering it’s so unexpected, but fortunately Deena does not die. She’s hurt, but she’s able to tie Sam up with a phone cord and call Josh down for help.

The last we see Sam, she’s tied up on the kitchen floor growling and writhing around. Deena swears she’s going to save her, and then she and Josh head off to find some answers.

Hopefully, we’ll get some of those answers in the next film of the trilogy, Fear Street Part 2: 1978. The second installment drops on Netflix next Friday, July 9, so make sure to tune in!
