The Last Kingdom season 5 filming wraps: When is the season coming to Netflix?

The Last Kingdom season 5 filming has officially come to an end. What does this mean for the season’s arrival on Netflix?

Director Jon East shared the update about The Last Kingdom season 5 filming on his Instagram. Filming finished on Monday, June 21 based on the comment about “as of last night.” Like a few period dramas and premium cable/streaming shows, filming happens in blocks, and filming wrapped on episodes nine and 10 this week.

This doesn’t mean the season is ready to come to Netflix. There is still the post-production stage to get through. This can take months to get right, especially in a time of COVID.

We haven’t heard much about filming during the season. It’s hard to say just how much post-production work will be needed. For example, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke recently spoke about how Canada has limits of only 50 people on set at a time, which made it difficult for the scenes that can include 500 people. The Last Kingdom films in Europe, in countries that have their own limitations.

We know the filming often requires a lot of extras. There are a lot of battles, and there’s no doubt that there will be one during the final episode of the season. If there have been limits on the number of extras on set, that could mean a lot of extra post-production work.

When will The Last Kingdom season 5 come to Netflix?

We don’t have an exact release date for the season yet. It will take a few months to get through post-production, even without any COVID protocols during filming. With a June finish date, it’s unlikely that the show will arrive in 2021.

What we can expect is an epic season. East shared that the final two episodes of the series (sadly, The Last Kingdom season 5 is going to be the last) are the most complex he’s ever done. With the two episodes being the final two episodes ever, we can expect at least one major battle. It’s going to be the biggest yet.
