Jennifer Lopez has been in the spotlight recently for her marriage to Ben Affleck and various projects, like Halftime, Marry Me, Shotgun Wedding and Netflix's The Mother. Her next project with Netflix is the upcoming sci-fi thriller, Atlas, and we've shared all there is to know about it right below.

Brad Peyton (Rampage and San Andreas) directed the film, from a screenplay co-written by Aron Eli Coleite and Leo Sardarian. Coleite is known for co-creating the comedy-drama series Daybreak, while Sardarian is known for previously writing for the crime drama series StartUp.

Back in 2021, Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions signed a first-look deal with Netflix to create films, TV series, and other content focusing on diverse female actors, writers, and filmmakers. Two of those projects mentioned at the time were the already-released action flick The Mother and an upcoming thriller called The Cipher, which is an adaptation of the novel penned by Isabella Maldonado. Atlas is another film in her pact with Netflix.

Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina produced the sci-fi thriller film through Nuyorican Productions. In addition, Peyton and Jeff Fierson produced through ASAP Entertainment, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, and Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti/Schechter Films. Samson Mücke and Michael Riley McGrath signed on as executive producers.

Atlas movie release date

Do you have your calendar up and ready? If so, go ahead and mark off Friday, May 24, 2024, because that's when Atlas is set to be released on Netflix. It'll likely drop on the streaming platform at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET on this date since that's when Netflix usually releases new content. Of course, we didn't forget about our Midwest folks! If you're in the Central time zone, you can expect the movie to drop at 2:00 a.m. CT on May 24.

Atlas is rated PG-13, meaning it may be inappropriate for ages under 13. It was given this maturity rating for strong sci-fi violence, action, bloody images, and strong language. Overall, parents are strongly cautioned.

Cast

Lopez portrays the titular character in the sci-fi film. The actress and producer also shared her excitement for the film with a tweet in June 2021. She plays the role of Atlas Shepherd, a government data analyst.

The cast continued to grow in September 2022, when Once Upon a Time and The Lincoln Lawyer star Lana Parrilla added even more star power to the stacked cast. Gregory James Cohan and Mark Strong joined the cast later and will be playing the roles of Smith and General Boothe.

What is Atlas on Netflix about?

Lopez’s character is a woman who lives in a future where artificial intelligence soldiers are common. One of those soldiers decides that ending humanity is the only solution to ensure that war will become non-existent. She realizes she must confront her greatest fear, the AI soldiers, by partnering with one of them to defeat the rogue.

Here’s the official logline for the movie via a Netflix press release:

"Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it."
