Elite has been thrilling audiences since its premiere in 2018. The Spanish language teen drama set in Las Encinas, a school dripping with wealth and scandal, is this generation’s tales of the rich and famous. Think Gossip Girl but with more murder and a substantial lack of restrictions networks have to contend with when it comes to what they can and cannot show.

The series is set to head into its fourth season run on Friday, June 18, with its Elite: Short Stories series dropping episodes in anticipation of the new season starting Monday, June 14. As such, buzz around this teen series is about to skyrocket.

Have you wanted to tune into Elite after seeing Twitter and the rest of the internet blow up about the exploits of Nadia, Guzman, Omar, Ander and the rest of the Las Encinas students that have a flare for the dramatic?

Here’s what you need to know about the show’s rating, including why this teen drama isn’t the kind of scandalous that fades to black.

Elite age rating

It’s no secret that Netflix’s teen content often flirts with the line of what most audiences would consider appropriate for teenagers and what others would consider adult content with teen characters.

Elite is a teen drama that fits squarely in the same category as HBO’s Euphoria. Its TV-MA rating isn’t there because of a few F-bombs or more than one sexual encounter that includes brief flashes of nudity.

This series pulls the curtain all the way back on its characters and the messiness of their lives. According to IMDb, sex and nudity are a frequent occurrence on Elite. This includes graphic explorations of these teens’ sex lives.

There’s also the typical depiction of excess partying and indulgence common to teen dramas. Alcohol and drugs are used throughout the series. There are heavy topics discussed surrounding this proclivity that does involve drug dealing and an overdose.

Though relationships are a huge draw for Elite, the series is a part of the crime thriller genre. Murder sits at the heart of more than one of the show’s plots, creating a suspense-filled atmosphere that occasionally depicts violent altercations with bloody consequences.

Other issues discussed and explored in the series are incest, homophobia, Islamophobia, classism, bullying, illness and mental health to name a few.

So, if you’re looking for a lighthearted series full of frivolity, debauchery and the kind of scandal that doesn’t land its characters in the hot seat answering questions about their potential involvement with a murder, that’s not Elite.

However, if you want a mixture of light and dark themes, giving you both catty teens with superiority complexes, family issues and budding romances with a side of mystery, chaos and criminal intent, then the first three seasons of Elite are available to stream on Netflix with the fourth to be released Friday, June 18.
