Shadow and Bone season 2 release date, cast, new trailer, and more

We finally know when Shadow and Bone season 2 is coming to Netflix! And, on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, Netflix dropped the new trailer for season 2 at IGN Fan Fest.

It’s been a long time since Netflix released the first season of Shadow and Bone in April 2021. Obviously, it takes a lot to bring a show like this to life, but this two-year wait has been tough on fans.

The good news is Shadow and Bone season 2 is right around the corner.

Good news, Shadow and Bone fans! We won’t have to wait too long for season 2 as we finally have confirmation it will be released on March 16, 2023. That’s around three months away, so mark your calendars! We’re hoping to get more details and maybe even a teaser in the coming weeks.

On Jan. 13, 2022, Netflix confirmed the start of production on Shadow and Bone season 2. We were under the impression production would begin in the fall of 2021, but that obviously did not happen for whatever reason. Production wrapped on season 2 in 2022, which set up the spring 2023 release date for the new season.

We have to expect almost all of the characters from Shadow and Bone will be back for season 2, which means the full cast should be back.

Netflix also confirmed Lewis Tan will be playing Tolya Yul-Bataar in season 2, alongside Anna Leong Brophy as Tamar Kir-Bataar. Patrick Gibson will star as Nikolai Lantsov, and Jack Wolfe will play Wylan Hendriks. Some of the new characters were also featured in the new cast video!

Shadow and Bone season 1 ending explained

At the end of the first season of Shadow and Bone, Alina and Mal, with the help of Zoya and the Crows, stopped the Darkling. They all boarded a ship that was leaving Ravka for other parts of the world, where they’d lay low for as long as they could, except Zoya. She sets out on her own.

We also see that the Darkling was not killed in the Shadow Fold. Instead, he emerges from the Fold with Shadow warriors behind him. YIKES!

What does it all mean for Shadow and Bone season 2?

We’re expecting Shadow and Bone will follow the events of Leigh Bardugo’s other Grishaverse books. In Shadow and Bone season 2, Alina and Mal will likely be on the run from the Darkling, who will want revenge and Alina’s power. The Crows will be summoned for one of the biggest heists in history. We’re also going to meet some new and important characters in the new season.

How many seasons of Shadow and Bone are there?

So far, there is only one season of the series on Netflix. There’s a lot more potential for more seasons on Netflix, so stay tuned for more news on future seasons of Shadow and Bone. 

There are three books in Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone series, so we’re hoping for at least three seasons. The series also brings in stories from Bardugo’s Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, so the story is there if Netflix wants to tell it.

Is Shadow and Bone renewed for season 3?

At the time of publishing, Netflix has not commented on Shadow and Bone season 3 yet, so we don’t know if the show is going to be renewed. We know Netflix doesn’t cancel many (or if any) hits, so if viewers tune in for Shadow and Bone season 2 in March, finish the full season in a relatively quick manner, and the reception is good, there’s no doubt Shadow and Bone season 3 will happen.

Things start to get a little dicey when viewership drops between season 1 and season 2 of a show and if fans don’t finish the season quickly. If you want to see Shadow and Bone season 3, spread the word to friends, family, and online, and make sure you watch season 2!
