The Netherfield Girls starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan in the works at Netflix

Jane Austen fans, this is not a drill! Yet another adaptation of the classic author’s work is being brought to the small screen for Netflix‘s growing romance base. While we’re all still itching to see what the Dakota Johnson-led Persuasion has to offer, we need to add another Austen-inspired film to our watch list. The Netherfield Girls is coming for that teen rom-com crown!

The Netflix movie, which will be a Pride and Prejudice retelling, stars Never Have I Ever‘s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as this iteration’s Elizabeth Bennett. Variety reports the film is being described as a contemporary take on a classic a la Easy A and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Clearly, the choice of casting Ramakrishnan in the lead role was a no brainer. Irreverent, charming humor is right up her alley. But now we’re anxious to know who her Darcy will be. We’re still in the early stages of this film’s development, however, that’s not stopping our excitement.

We’re going to have to wait on release date news concerning this new Austen project for the platform. There’s been no word on when viewers can expect to see the film land on the streamer. Personally, I’m hoping for an Austen weekend pairing Persuasion and The Netherfield Girls together. Though, it’s unclear when the latter will begin filming, so that may not be in the cards.

With The Netherfield Girls being the second Austen-inspired film coming to Netflix, we do wonder if the streamer will start carving out a niche space for adaptations of the author’s work. Romance is becoming a bigger and bigger draw for the platform after all. Not to mention, they’ve already got their foot in the door with teen romcoms as it is.

Only time will tell, but if you’re a fan of romance, Netflix is starting to shape up into a good destination spot for your particular interests. I wouldn’t call it the Bridgerton effect, as the streamer has been steadily building a romance-centric audience for years. But, the series is definitely responsible for paving more of the way down romance lane.
