There should always be room on your watch list for a few decent throwbacks, especially throwbacks that have been critically acclaimed and left an impact on pop culture. Among the best throwbacks on Netflix (and there’s a lot of them!) is Brokeback Mountain, a movie that has been discussed since its release over 15 years ago but remains a worthy watch.

Based on the 1997 short story of the same name by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain takes place in Wyoming in 1963 and centers on the relationship between rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and ranch hand Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger). When the pair are hired as sheep herders on Brokeback Mountain, they find themselves falling for each other.

Brokeback Mountain made a lot of waves at the time of its release, but the film was still a commercial and critical hit, bringing in over $178 million worldwide against a $14 million budget and holding an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Out of its eight Academy Award nominations, the Best Picture nominee took home three for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. Be sure to add this turning point in queer cinema to your Netflix watch list!
