There’s truly no shortage of critically acclaimed movies on Netflix. The streaming service has plenty of its own well-received blockbusters to its name, but it’s also home to just as many smaller films with critical acclaim. Some of these might still go under the radar after their release, just like the 2019 drama film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

Based on the memoir of the same name by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind stars Maxwell Simba as William Kamkwamba, a young boy in Malawi with a mind for invention. William creates a device like a windmill to power a water pump in order to help save his village and family members from a drought and impending famine.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind comes from director Chiwetel Ejiofor, the Academy Award-nominated actor who made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix drama. Upon release, the film earned positive reviews from critics and holds an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the film was chosen as the British selection for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, it didn’t land the nomination. Still, it’s one of the best critically acclaimed movies on Netflix.
