In recent years, Netflix has become something of a haven for foreign language films. Many of the top-performing original films on the streaming service, whether its in the theatrical limited release or on the awards circuit, are foreign language films that have found a fitting home among Netflix’s worldwide audience. Last year’s The Life Ahead is one of the most critically acclaimed original films.

Based on the novel The Life Before Us by Romain Gary and the previous film adaptation, 1977’s Madame Rosa, film legend Sophia Loren stars in The Life Ahead as Madame Rosa, a Holocaust survivor and former sex worker running a daycare business in Italy. When Rosa takes in 12-year-old orphan Momo (Ibrahima Gueye), who recently robbed Rosa, the pair discover an unexpected kindred connection as something of an untraditional family.

The Life Ahead premiered in a limited release in November 2020 before making its streaming debut on Netflix in December. Naturally, the filmed earned positive reception from critics, holding a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and picking up high marks for Loren’s performance. After Academy Award and Golden Globes nominations, it’s clear this is one critically acclaimed movie worthing watching on Netflix.
