If you’re looking for only critically acclaimed movies on Netflix, Roma should, without question, come up in your search. The streaming service has made a lot of history in its own right with the strides it made in original content, but the Academy Award-winning drama film from writer-director Alfonso Cuarón made its own landmark history. Also, the critics just had this one right.

Roma takes place in the middle-class neighborhood Roma of Mexico City and centers on Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a domestic worker helping care for the four children of a married couple. When complications arise for Cleo and the family, a vacation brings them all closer together. Cuarón draws from his childhood experiences to illustrate a picture of Roma during the turbulent 1970s.

Upon release, Roma defied all kinds of odds, both in its limited theatrical release and subsequent debut on Netflix. The film netted an easy 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was tied with The Favourite for the most nominated film at the Academy Awards, each with 10. Roma scored three wins for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography, helping push Netflix’s critically acclaimed movies to new heights.
