If you’re a film buff with a vested interest in epic crime thrillers starring veteran actors, then wow is The Irishman exclusively for you. When Netflix released its latest original film and big-ticket awards season entry in 2019, there was much conversation surrounding The Irishman. But no one can deny that it’s a stunning achievement in filmmaking and a critics’ favorite.

Based on the nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, The Irishman takes place in the 1950s and follows the story of truck driver Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) as he starts working with Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and his crime family. Before long, Sheeran proves himself a top hitman and works for organized crime boss Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino)

The Irishman debuted on Netflix to lots of chatter, which translated to impressive viewership numbers and even more impressive critical acclaim. Its 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes pales in comparison to the 10 Academy Award nominations the film earned. Although The Irishman walked away empty handed, it’s still one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies
