Back in 2017 when Netflix released its original action-adventure film Okja, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho might not have been totally on your mainstream radar. But after his 2019 film Parasite took the world by storm and won multiple Oscars, he’s certainly one of our new favorites to watch. Obviously, Joon-ho’s critically acclaimed film Okja is just as much a must-watch.

Okja takes place in South Korea and centers on a young girl named Mija (Ahn Seo-huyn), who lives with her grandfather and their super pig, Okja. However, when a multinational conglomerate takes Okja and transports Mija’s dearest companion to New York with big plans for the super pig, Mija takes it upon herself to embark on a rescue mission for Okja.

Even though there was some booing drama during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival over Netflix’s new standing in the film industry (how far we’ve come!), Okja earned mostly positive reception from critics. The film holds an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and, most impressively, competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Don’t sleep on this critically acclaimed super pig!
