Although it’s hard to believe now, the first Netflix original film was only released a mere six years ago. Since then, the streaming service has grown exponentially in the breadth and variety of its original content output. But we should never forget that Beasts of No Nation, the first ever Netflix original movie, was a critically acclaimed homerun and a tough act to follow.

Based on the novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala, Beasts of No Nation takes place in West Africa in the midst of a civil war as young orphan Agu (Abraham Attah) trains with a warlord known as the Commandant (Idris Elba) to join the ranks of his guerrilla soldiers. Agu grapples with the loss of his family, life and innocence as he reconciles the journey he now faces.

Beasts of No Nation was released in October 2015 and quickly gained positive reception from critics, topping out with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nominations from the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards and more followed, and the film will soon be the next Netflix original added to the Criterion Collection. If that’s not critical acclaim, what is?
