Even though millennials grew up spoiled with some of the greatest teen movies of all time from the ’80s and ’90s, they weren’t always the ones that won over critics. But we love them anyway. These days, coming-of-age movies can be some of the best-reviewed and well-made films on the big (or small) screen, such as Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird.

Saoirse Ronan stars in Lady Bird as Christine McPherson, a self-assured high school senior in Sacramento, California who would rather be known as Lady Bird. (“It’s the titular role!”) Lady Bird’s strong will and headstrong ambition often tangles with her mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf), whose own hopes and pressures for her daughter causes friction in their relationship.

Lady Bird ended 2017 as the best-reviewed movie of the year with a rare 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film earned five well-deserved Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. As far as directorial debuts go, Gerwig’s is a near-perfect masterpiece that’s available to watch on Netflix right now.
