They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, the Addams Family!  Fans of the long-running franchise know that theme song all too well, and have been waiting on the edge of their seats to find out more information about the upcoming Wednesday Addams series coming to Netflix.

Though we saw a new rendition of the famous family on our screens with the animated film The Addams Family in 2019, what’s really piqued our interest in the Netflix project is that it’ll be live-action. Of course, fans have been speculating who could play the next Wednesday Addams, who many know best as being portrayed by Christina Ricci. Well, the casting announcement has been made, and Netflix fans will not be disappointed!

As reported by Deadline today, actress Jenna Ortega will play Wednesday Addams in the new television series. People will know Ortega for her roles as Ellie in You, Phoebe in The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and Young Jane in Jane the Virgin. Next up, she’ll have a part in the new Scream movie, proving she’s a horror queen in the making!

The Wednesday Addams show on Netflix is directed by Tim Burton and will be a Young Adult telling of the classic character’s story. Per Deadline, here’s what you can expect from the upcoming series:

"The coming-of-age comedy, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and to be directed by Burton, is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ (Ortega) years as a student at Nevermore Academy. That’s where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships."

As for additional castings, we’re still in the dark for now. Not so surprisingly, fans have been rallying for Ricci to be included in the show in any capacity, and there’s even been a report claiming she could be playing Morticia Addams, Wednesday’s mother. While that would be awesome, this is all just a rumor for now.

A release date for Wednesday has not yet been announced, but we’ll keep you updated once we hear anything.
