Josie and the Pussycats are rockin’ into Riverdale season 5

Hey, hey! Josie and the Pussycats are making a return to The CW with a gig lined up in Riverdale season 5. It’s been years since the original trio put on their cat ears and jammed out together, and we’re hoping they stick around for the long haul this time or at least long enough to catch the true spirit of their iconic band.

The last we left off with Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), Valerie Brown (Hayley Law), and Melody Valentine (Asha Bromfeld) they were on the outs. Josie’s leadership style, which consisted of needing to have control over every element of the group, led to in-fighting and a dissolution of what should have been a tight-knit trio of rockers.

The end of Josie and the Pussycats signaled the end of Valerie and Melody’s time on Riverdale leaving Josie to be the lone member of the group present on the show in its third season. To say fans of the band were disappointed would be an understatement.

Murray’s reprisal of Josie for the short-lived Katy Keene series revisited the young musician’s feelings on what happened between her and her friends. The maturity and perspective she’d gained with time and distance allowed for a new iteration of Josie and the Pussycats to take the stage on the series.

In doing so, it gave Riverdale fans who watched the spin-off show an opportunity to see Josie coming into her own as a leader learning to trust the creativity and ideas presented by her band members and loosen up the reins. This time around it seems we’ll be getting to see her in action with Melody and Valerie again instead of Cricket (Azriel Crews) and Trula Twyst (Emily Rafala).

When will Josie and the Pussycats return to Riverdale?

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took to Instagram May 13 to announce the return of the trio in “Chapter Ninety-One: The Return of the Pussycats” which will be episode 15 of season 5.

The artwork on the script looked to be that of a cartoon version of the original line-up but, for some fans (read: me), Bromfield confirming the news on Twitter with a picture of her, Murray, and Law together made that announcement even more joyous.

If there are no breaks in Riverdale‘s initial return for 5B then we should be able to see Josie and the Pussycats on Wednesday, September 8. Mark your calendars, y’all, you won’t want to miss this return!
