Some superheroes live outside of the universes dreamed up for Marvel and DC comics. The team of super-powered do-gooders that make up Jupiter’s Legacy are one such group.

First created in 2013 by Mark Millar, the comic series in this Netflix original action drama is about exactly what the title says. Legacy. Specifically, the legacy and duty parents pass on to their children, the weight of that burden and the disconnect between differing generations.

Jupiter’s Legacy will encompass two narratives as an origin story and a passing of the torch. The world was different when the older heroes got their powers. They were ordinary individuals who earned their abilities. They made an active choice to protect the world with their gifts.

The younger heroes were born into this never-ending fight. They didn’t choose to have abilities, and stepping in their parents’ shoes isn’t a choice, it’s an expectation. The difference is sure to be a topic of exploration in the series.

Jupiter’s Legacy plot synopsis

Jupiter’s Legacy will land on Netflix on Friday, May 7. While that’s not a lightning flash away, it is just around the corner. The first season spans eight episodes.

Based on the trailer, the series is going to be action-packed, but its tone is certain to strike a resemblance to family dramas. The kind that dig into the rot that can fester between people when expectations and absence leave wounds that when hit trigger explosive reactions.

Jupiter’s Legacy looks to have a lot of the bells and whistles typical to the superhero genre along with storytelling aiming for something deeper. Comics fans know those tend to be the more memorable narratives, the ones that strike at the heart of universal themes that resonate with audiences.

Check out the synopsis for Jupiter’s Legacy, via Netflix:
