What Lies Below may be the No. 1 movie on Netflix right now, but that doesn’t mean it’s great. In fact, the horror movie may leave you feeling disappointed after watching. And with one too many unanswered questions.

For the most part, critics are giving What Lies Below a thumbs up. At Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is sitting with a 62% fresh score. Look over to your left, though, and you’ll find that the audience score isn’t even close to as great. It’s at 34% at the time of this writing.

It’s not uncommon for critics and fans to disagree by such a large percentage. When it comes to What Lies Below, I have to side with the audience. The “mystery thriller” may pack a lot of mystery, but no thrills, no answers, no interesting characters.

First, full disclosure, I’ll admit that I allowed the film poster to fool me. A hot guy on the cover, but billed as a horror? Could this be a 365 Days meets horror thriller? Yes, please!

Unfortunately, it’s none of that. And I knew this well before the middle act, but I was already too invested and in need of answers to stop watching.

What Lies Below is bonkers, but not in a good way

The movie follows 16-year-old Liberty (Ema Horvath) meeting her mom’s new boyfriend, John (Trey Tucker). John is handsome, young, and seemingly perfect, but Liberty isn’t very trusting, and for good reason!

It doesn’t take long for Liberty to suspect that John is up to something. But what, exactly? Who is he and what does he want with her and her mother?

Well, spoiler alert, we get a good idea, but it’s never really explained. And we want to care about the characters, especially Liberty, but we never get the chance to do that. Her mom, Michelle (Mena Suvari), is even less pleasant.

What Lies Below offers a lot of mystery, but it doesn’t lead anywhere and it never gets very exciting. With a running time of 1 hour and 27 minutes, though, it’s not a complete waste of time.

If you are still curious, you should give it a watch! Who knows, you may think it’s so bad, that it’s good.
