What Lies Below is one of the new titles that came to Netflix in April 2021 and was officially released on April 4th. In only four days, the film currently stands at number 1 on Netflix’s top ten trending list—and you’re probably wondering what’s all the hype surrounding this film about?
What Lies Below has a critic score of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty good by the review website’s standards. A reviewer even gave the film a 3 out of 4, stating that’s it’s a “small scale mystery horror with big ideas. It may not look like much at first, but the payoff is worthwhile.”
A great payoff at the end? This definitely sounds exciting enough to give it a watch, but before you do, let us give you a quick rundown on what you’re in for.
What is What Lies Below about?
It’s a sci-fi thriller about a teen, Libby, who believes that supernatural human beings walk amongst us. The evidence for this is much closer than she thinks. Here is the official synopsis for the film on Netflix:
"Back home at her lake house, a teenager begins to suspect that a sinister force lurks beneath the surface of her mother’s too-perfect new lover."
The move features an hour and twenty-seven minutes of suspense and plot twists, including an ending that no one expected. We don’t want to give too much away, but you’re definitely in for a thrilling ride with What Lies Below.

The cast of What Lies Below features a few fresh faces including Trey Tucker, AprilAnn Dais, and Troy Iwata.
In addition to this, the cast has a few familiar names such as The 40-Year-Old Version actress Haskiri Velazquez, American Pie actress Mena Suvari, and Ema Horvath—who will star alongside Suvari in the upcoming Lord of the Rings television series on Amazon.
