The Crown is one of the most talked-about shows on Netflix, and everyone can’t wait to see the next chapter unfold. Season 4 of the drama hit the streaming service on Nov. 15, 2020, but fans are already eager to know what will happen in The Crown season 5.

With the award-winning The Crown season 4, fans were excited to see the final performances from Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, Tobias Menzies, and the rest of the breathtaking cast. The series has always brought in some serious star power to fill the shoes of the monarchy magnificently, and The Crown season 5 is sure not to disappoint.

Despite the original plan being for a six-chapter affair, for a while many subscribers were under the impression that The Crown season 5 was going to be the last. Peter Morgan even once indicated that The Crown season 5 was to be the final run, but he told Deadline he changed his mind. Netflix later announced there would be a sixth season, meaning fans should prepare themselves for the beginning of the end when The Crown season 5 finally makes its way to Netflix.

The Crown season 5 release date

During Netflix’s first TUDUM fan event in September 2021, Netflix announced that The Crown season 5 would be released in November 2022. Aligned with the series’ resurgence in popularity due to current events, The Crown will again announce the news at 2022’s TUDUM event.

As luck would have, Netflix announced that The Crown season 5 would be released on Nov. 9!

Prior to the announcements at TUDUM, Deadline shared the production team would be picking things back up for The Crown season 5 in June 2021. The fifth season was initially slated to come out in the spring of 2021, but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, things obviously changed.

But it isn’t that dramatic of a difference as this two-year gap is nothing new for this series, especially when it brings in a new set of actors. When Claire Foy finished her tenure as the Queen, and Olivia Colman took over, the same amount of time took place in-between seasons.

The Crown season 5 cast

One thing the Netflix original is known for is its brilliant choices when it comes to casting, and we already know who is on the roster for The Crown season 5. The series started off with Claire Foy portraying Queen Elizabeth with Olivia Colman taking over for seasons three and four.

For The Crown season 5, Imelda Staunton, who fans will recognize from the Harry Potter films and most recently on the Apple TV+ series Trying, will be taking The Crown to the finish line, which is something she is very honored to be a part of as she is a fan of the Netflix original series.

Jessica Kirby and Helen Bonham Carter have been exceptional as Princess Margaret, and bringing it home for the final two seasons will be none other than Lesley Manville. Manville’s most notable credits include Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, The Queen, Love Life, and Phantom Thread.

Game of Thrones actor and The Two Popes star, Academy Award nominee Jonathan Pryce will take over as Duke of Edinburgh after a great run by fellow Thrones alumni Tobias Menzies. Princess Diana will be played by Tenet‘s Elizabeth Debicki for both seasons 5 and 6, making the final two runs a star-studded affair no one should miss.

Check out the season 5 cast:

  • Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II
  • Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
  • Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret
  • Jonny Lee Miller as John Major
  • Flora Montgomery as Norma Major

The Crown season 5 synopsis

Season 4 of The Crown focused on the 1970s and 1980s, so the next endeavor will bring audiences into the 1990s, which was a rough decade for the royal family. Here’s the thorough synopsis of what we can expect from Netflix’s Media Center:

"With the new decade in its stride, the Royal Family are presented with possibly their biggest challenge to date; as the public openly question their role in ’90s Britain. As Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) approaches the 40th anniversary of her accession, she reflects on a reign that has encompassed nine prime ministers, the advent of mass television and the twilight of the British Empire. Yet new challenges are on the horizon. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the transfer of sovereignty in Hong Kong signals a seismic shift in the international order presenting both obstacles and opportunities. Meanwhile, trouble is brewing closer to home. Prince Charles (Dominic West) pressures his mother to allow him to divorce Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), presenting a constitutional crisis of the monarchy. Rumours circulate as husband and wife are seen to live increasingly separate lives and, as media scrutiny intensifies, Diana decides to take control of her own narrative, breaking with family protocol to publish a book that undermines public support for Charles and exposes the cracks in the House of Windsor. Tensions are set to rise further as Mohamed Al Fayed (Salim Daw) arrives on the scene. Driven by his desire for acceptance of the highest order, he harnesses his self-made wealth and power to try and earn him and his son Dodi (Khalid Abdalla) a seat at the royal table."

It will be interesting to see how they handle that less-than-stellar time period involving marriage breakdowns from Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Princess Anne as well as the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997.
