Netflix is releasing a new original documentary/dramatic retelling of the infamous 2019 college admissions scandal, with particular focus on the orchestrator of the scheme Rick Singer. It’s titled Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal.

Directed and co-produced by Fyre director Chris Smith, Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal will be released on Netflix this Wednesday, March 17, 2021.

Operation Varsity Blues will incorporate talking-head interviews with personnel involved with uncovering the scandal and dramatic reenactments of the events that transpired, featuring Matthew Modine (Stranger ThingsFull Metal Jacket) as Singer.

In that sense, it is expected to operate along the same lines of popular Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma but with more of a Bling Ring vibe.

Operation Varsity Blues synopsis

We shared the synopsis of Operation Varsity Blues, via Netflix:

"“An examination that goes beyond the celebrity-driven headlines and dives into the methods used by Rick Singer, the man at the center of the shocking 2019 college admissions scandal, to persuade his wealthy clients to cheat an educational system already designed to benefit the privileged. Using an innovative combination of interviews and narrative recreations of the FBI’s wiretapped conversations between Singer and his clients, Operation Varsity Blues offers a rare glimpse into the enigmatic figure behind a scheme that exposed the lengths wealthy families would go to for admission into elite colleges, and angered a nation already grappling with the effects of widespread inequality.”"

Below, you can watch the trailer for one of Netflix’s most anticipated March titles.

After initially being made public just over two years ago, the college admissions scandal gained notoriety for its depiction in the media. As you can tell from the Operation Varsity Blues trailer, the documentary is sure to cover ground regarding many of the most indicting information regarding the scandal, including cheating on standardized tests, falsifying high school athletic participation in order to bribe college admissions facilitators, and bringing newfound attention to actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman.

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing some of the more factually detailed points of intrigue regarding this scandal, especially some things that hadn’t been made public. But the jury’s still out for me on whether the documentary’s dramatizations are going to be 100% accurate to the transcripts of uncovered communications between Singer and the parties, nor whether it will do justice in respecting the terms of the yet-to-be-concluded court cases involving many of the accused parties, as well as Singer himself.
