By Renee Hansen
As we come upon a new weekend, I see many posts on social media asking, “what series should I start next on Netflix?” I always reply as I have many favorite shows on Netflix to recommend. There are other ways to narrow down your own list.
There are useful tools on Netflix to help you choose what you should watch next. There is a bell icon that is for notifications. Here you will find great recommendations based on what you have watched and/or liked within your profile. There will also be featured New Arrivals.
If you click the New and Popular feature, you will see the top ten list, a Worth the Wait section that allows you to set a reminder for shows and movies that are coming soon, and a New on Netflix list. This will show new movies as well as shows on Netflix with new episodes.
Below is a list of 5 best shows on Netflix to watch this weekend
Murder Among the Mormons
Fans of true crime documentaries have another choice in Murder Among the Mormons. This series released this week and finds itself already sitting at number two on the Netflix top ten TV series.
This story follows the 1985 killing of two members of the Latter Day Saints establishment in Salt Lake City, Utah. The twist, they were killed by one of their own. Mark Hofmann was a well-respected member who was found to be a forger who forged all of his historical findings and was convicted of the murders.
The directors for this series are Tyler Meason, a documentarian who has focused on religious groups, and Jared Hess, known for his films Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and Gentlemen Broncos. Hess is a practicing Mormon who got his start in the film school at Brigham Young.
Although these murders did receive national coverage, the events have been forgotten by most people, but the pain is still there for the church members. Meason and Hess bring the story back around so that more people will know the horrible tale of Hofmann and his crimes.
Two Sentence Horror Stories
Who doesn’t love a good anthology horror series? Two Sentence Horror Stories consists of two seasons, the second that was just released this year.
Each season has 10 episodes, and each episode features a new tale and only runs for 20 minutes. This series has been developed around the memes that have circulated the internet for a long time. The memes are simple two-sentence horror stories that send chills down the reader’s spine.
It is an interesting take on something as simple as a meme. Check it out!
MeatEater
This series follows Steven Rinella and his hunting adventures. MeatEater has nine seasons, three of which are available on Netflix. The series released new episodes in February 2021. There is also a great website and a podcast.
Rinella travels the globe hunting a variety of prey during his adventures. He highlights his “field to plate” philosophy by hunting for his meal and showcasing how to use his catch to create amazing meals. This reality series is ideal for those who love to hunt and love the outdoors.
Rinella also has a fish and game cookbook and has authored 5 other books on wildlife, hunting, fishing, and wild game cooking.
Arrested Development
Arrested Development originally aired its first three seasons on Fox and was canceled by Fox in 2006. Netflix licensed new episodes in 2011, and in 2013 Netflix aired its first season.
The series revolves around the Bluth family, who was once wealthy and always dysfunctional. The patriarch George (Jeffrey Tambor) commits a white-collar crime and being sentenced to prison. This requires his son Michael (Jason Bateman) to run the family business and keep the whole eccentric family in line while trying to be a role model to his son George Micahel (Michael Cera).
Rounding out the family are Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, and Jessica Walter. There are many recurring cast members that you will be familiar with.
Ron Howard serves as an executive producer and narrator, and in some of the later seasons, he plays himself.
This isn’t your normal sitcom. It is intelligent and makes the viewer pay attention as many jokes won’t resolve until a later episode. This is worth the watch.
Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events
If it’s something for the whole family, why not check out Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events?
This series has three seasons and follows the Baudelaire orphans and the evil Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) and all the trouble he causes for these children.
This series is based on the novel series of the same name. The Baudelaire children have lost their parents, and Count Olaf will do anything to get his hands on their fortune left to them by their parents.
It is a bit dark sometimes, so keep that in mind.
Have a great weekend and enjoy whichever shows on Netflix you choose to watch.
