Netflix orders Asterix and Obelix series based on the famous French comic
The Adventures of Asterix is easily the most famous comic series in France. In fact, it’s so beloved that the comic’s two main characters, Asterix and Obelix, have appeared in movies and video games, and even have their own theme park just outside of Paris.
It’s also just been reported that Netflix has announced the duo will receive their first-ever animated TV series.
The general storyline of the comics and films is that Asterix and Obelix have to fight off pesky Roman invaders who are constantly trying to conquer the ancient region of Gaul.
The comics are known for their punchy lines and goofy characters.
When is Asterix and Obelix coming out on Netflix?
The new 3D animated original series will have a limited run and be called Asterix and the Big Fight. It is expected to start streaming on Netflix in 2023.
To help bring the story to life, Netflix will be teaming up with publishing juggernaut, Hachette, as well as framed French actor/writer/director, Alain Chabat. To American audiences, Chabat is probably best known for playing Napoleon Bonaparte in the Ben Stiller comedy, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
However, Chabat is also a prominent screenwriter in France and was responsible for creating the 2002 Asterix movie, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, which has been one of France’s highest-grossing films of all time. Netflix is hoping to bring Chabat’s wit and sly humor to the series to captivate audiences of all ages.
While there are currently many shows based on comic book characters (WandaVision, The Umbrella Academy, and The Flash, just to name a few), there aren’t many based on non-superhero comic franchises. It will be interesting to see the success of Asterix and the Big Fight, which could potentially usher in a new era of comic-inspired movies and TV shows.
The series is expected to be dubbed in numerous languages and streamed globally on Netflix.
