The movie Mank is quickly becoming an awards season favorite this year, with six nominations at this year’s Golden Globes. It’s expected to perform similarly at the Oscars, seeing as it’s ostensibly an ode to old Hollywood and checking a lot of the “awards darling” boxes in the process. But this is no Green Book; Mank is such a good movie.
Centered around the life of Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) as he punches out the script for the movie that would become Citizen Kane, Mank depicts the feverish, exorbitant, and frequently detrimental politics of Hollywood moviemaking in the 1930s as seen through the eyes of one of its most jeering scribes.
The film is gorgeous, heavily stylized, and powerfully executed, with acclaim coming in for director David Fincher, Oldman, and Amanda Seyfried in her portrayal of Marion Davies. It’s nominated at this year’s Golden Globes in the Motion Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, Screenplay (David Fincher’s late father Jack), and Original Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, in a complete zag from their industrial-heavy scores of Fincher films past).
It’s going to be exciting to see if Mank wins this movie awards season, but you might not remember where to see it – in particular, is it on Netflix?
Can I watch Mank on Netflix?
Of course, you can watch Mank on Netflix, you organ grinder’s monkey. Mank was made as a Netflix original, and it is on the streaming service now for your viewing pleasure. And as it’s a Netflix original, it’s there to stay.
After you watch (and rewatch) Mank, you might also check out some other Netflix movies featuring its cast and crew. David Fincher has worked extensively with Netflix as of late, and his series House of Cards and Mindhunter are on Netflix in their entireties, as well as his films The Social Network and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. You can find Gary Oldman in the criminally underseen The Laundromat, and Amanda Seyfried’s performance in Les Miserables is quite good as well.
