One of the biggest questions Stranger Things fans have is about Dr. Martin Brenner, played by Matthew Modine, and if the character will return at some point in Stranger Things season 4.

Modine starred in the first season of Stranger Things what seems like forever ago. Since then, Stranger Things was renewed for an additional three (and basically four seasons). And, there’s been lots of speculation in Dr. Brenner would return.

Dr. Brenner worked for the Hawkins National Lab and was responsible for everything happening at the lab, including the Upside Down, the experiments on kids and people like Eleven, and more.

Let’s take a look at Dr. Brenner’s past and future in light of recent comments on Dr. Brenner’s return in Stranger Things by Modine.

Did Dr. Brenner die in Stranger Things?

After watching the first season of Stranger Things, I thought Dr. Brenner was killed at Hawkins Middle School when the Demogorgon shows up. Eleven, Mike, Lucas and Dustin were hiding in the school when Brenner and the lab goons showed up to take her back.

In Stranger Things season 2, we learn that Dr. Brenner is, in fact, not dead, as many fans thought. He was in the wind, and that’s the last we’ve heard or seen about the character.

As we’ve seen in this show and others, no character is dead unless we see the body, and even when we do see the body, sometimes it’s just full of fuzz, like Will in the first season.

The absence of Dr. Brenner’s body in season 1 opens the door for the character to return in Stranger Things season 4.

Will Dr. Brenner return in Stranger Things season 4?

There were rumors that Modine is going to be coming back as Dr. Brenner in Stranger Things season 4 earlier this year. Netflix has not confirmed that news, and until then, we won’t know for sure if Dr. Brenner is coming back.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Modine commented on a possible return in Stranger Things season 4 and beyond. We shared the quote below:

"“I’d love to be invited back. I really enjoyed working with [the show’s creators] Matt and Ross Duffer and the crew they assembled. It’s extraordinary how it took off and the heights it’s flown to. It’s a global phenomenon.”"

Modine also made a point to mention that “I’m in a secret place, in a secret world, in a state I can’t tell you,” in the interview.

Obviously, Modine is having fun with Stranger Things fans, and we love it! As everyone knows, Stranger Things season 4 is filming in Georgia right now.

I think that we’ll probably see Dr. Brenner in Stranger Things again at some point. Whether or not it’ll be in Stranger Things season 4, that’s still up in the air right now.

I feel like teasing the character being alive in season 2 was very purposeful. You don’t set that up unless you’re going to pay that off at some point. And, I don’t think Eleven’s arc is truly complete without meeting Brenner again killing him, letting him live, or whatever. The choice should be hers based on what she has been through during her formative years.

Stay tuned for more Stranger Things season 4 cast news! We’re expecting to see season 4 on Netflix sometime in 2021. We’ll share any info about the cast and release date as we find out.
