Speaking of passionate fanbases, Anne with an E were vocal about Netflix’s cancellation of the coming-of-age period drama. The Canadian co-production struck a chord with a fervent base of viewers, but these days, shows have a much shorter shelf life than we’re accustomed to. Still, we have to back up the Anne with an E hive and admit Netflix should have kept Anne around.

Based on the classic novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne with an E stars Amybeth McNulty as Anne Shirley, an orphan who’s adopted by brother and sister pair Matthew (R. H. Thomson) and Marilla Cuthbert (Geraldine James). The imaginative and free-spirited Anne eventually finds herself a family and a home in a place that wasn’t ready for but needed her energy.

Anne with an E debuted first in Canada and then Netflix on 2017 to critical acclaim. However, because the series wasn’t able to grow in viewership in its key demographic across its three seasons, Anne’s coming-of-age journey was cut short. In comparison, the series lasted just as long or longer than some modern shows, but it’s a shame Anne with an E wasn’t able to connect with a larger audience and bring this story to a new generation for more than three years.
