The more you look at what shows hit with the masses and what shows don’t, there really doesn’t seem to be a recognizable rhyme or reason. It’s some unpredictable mixture of timing and word of mouth. Of course, a touch of critical acclaim also doesn’t hurt. Obviously, Netflix’s original sci-fi drama Sense8 boasted some of each of these qualities, though they didn’t manage to come in sync for a long-running, mainstream smash-hit series.

From the Wachowskis, Sense8 centers on a group of eight strangers from around every corner of the world, who come to find they are emotionally and mentally connected as figures known as “sensates.” The series not only featured a compelling sci-fi story but was also lauded by fans for its exploration of themes relating to sexuality, identity, gender, and their various intersections with politics.

After a 12-episode first season, a Christmas special and a 10-episode second season, Sense8 was canceled for low viewership and high production costs. But due to the persistent passion of that devoted fanbase, a two-hour finale special wrapped up the series in June 2018. Regardless of having the opportunity to conclude the series with a fan-centered special, the fact that Sense8 didn’t gain popularity and was ever canceled should be a disappointment for Netflix.
