Is One Day at a Time canceled?

Seasons: 4

Developed By: Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce

Starring: Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Stephen Tobolowsky, Rita Moreno

In the past, Netflix became known as the television savior. When a beloved small-screen show got canned from its network, the streaming service would often swoop in a save the series for additional episodes, to the thankfulness of its fandom. But when Netflix canceled fan-favorite comedy reboot One Day at a Time, who would have thought the tables would have turned on the streamer in such an ironic way?

Based on the 1975 sitcom of the same title, One Day at a Time centers on a Cuban-American family, led by mother and Army veteran Penelope (Justina Machado). A single mother of two teenagers, Penelope’s mother Lydia (Rita Moreno) helps out and delivers some of the show’s funniest one-liners. The feel-good sitcom packed a punch of important and impactful storytelling and representation we needed on TV.

Unfortunately, after a rocky run on Netflix that found the series continually on the bubble, One Day at a Time was canceled after its third season. In an unprecedented move, Pop TV, the stateside home of Schitt’s Creek, picked up the series for a fourth season of 13 episodes. Only seven episodes aired in 2020 and the series was, yet again, canceled. Netflix should be embarrassed for letting this true gem go and not giving it a chance to shine.
