Is American Vandal canceled?

Seasons: 2

Created By: Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda

Starring: Tyler Alvarez, Griffin Gluck, Jimmy Tatro

More often than not, certain pieces of pop culture enjoy their 15 minutes of fame before being overshadowed by the next big thing. Netflix’s mockumentary comedy series American Vandal premiered in 2017, perhaps at the perfect time. But in spite of critical acclaim and a decent showing with the binge-watching set at large, the series came and went in a blitz.

American Vandal tackles the rise of true crime documentaries by the likes of Serial and Netflix’s own fan-favorite Making a Murderer with a parody approach. In the first season, American Vandal takes place in the midst of the aftershocks of a high school prank that saw over 25 faculty cars vandalized with phallic imagery. Peter (Tyler Alvarez) and Sam (Griffin Gluck) investigate the crime, and the pair tackles a new high school prankster in season 2.

Upon premiere, American Vandal quickly gained attention as something a little bit different than what we were used to receiving on Netflix. A little sillier but nonetheless watchable, both seasons hold a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the series was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special at the Emmy Awards. It’s strange to a series go out so soon with so much fire behind it, but Netflix could still right that wrong in the future.
