Is She’s Gotta Have It canceled?

Seasons: 2

Created By: Spike Lee

Starring: DeWanda Wise, Anthony Ramos, Lyriq Bent, Cleo Anthony, Margot Bingham, Chyna Layne, De’Andre Aziza

If you’ve noticed that it’s become increasingly rare for a Netflix series to last a decent amount of time, you’re definitely not alone. Due to matters outside of our control, sometimes Netflix originals come and go much quicker than we’d prefer. Case in point, the comedy-drama series She’s Gotta Have It lasted for a mere two seasons of 19 episodes much to our disappointment.

Based on the 1986 film of the same name directed by series creator Spike Lee, She’s Gotta Have It stars DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, an artist balancing a complicated dating world of three potential suitors with an ongoing journey of self-discovery. In the second season, Nola struggled with the power of her creativity but the pull of corporate America in Brooklyn and beyond.

She’s Gotta Have It debuted in November 2017 and ended with its second season in May 2019, an extended gap that more than anything hindered the show’s momentum with its audience. The thin line between relevancy and visibility on Netflix as an original series certainly hurt this potential hit. Surely, Lee and his modernized series had a lot more to say and we could have had it if Netflix had given it more of a chance rather than canceling it in its prime.
