34. Mystic Pizza

Mystic Pizza follows three teenage girls, Kat, Dasy, and Jojo, as they become adults while working at a pizza place in Mystic, Connecticut. It stars Annabeth Gish, Julia Roberts, Lili Taylor, Vincent D’Onofrio, William R. Moses, Adam Stroke, Conchata Ferrell, and Joanna Merlin.

Kat and Daisy are sisters and could not be more opposites. Kat wants to be an astronomer while Daisy simply wants to leave Mystic and have as much fun as possible. Kat raises money for school by working at Mystic Pizza and babysitting on the side.

Their mother clearly favors Kat over Daisy and that doesn’t change when Daisy meets a wealthy man, Charlies,  who she starts a relationship with almost immediately.  The relationship doesn’t last long.

Kat, on the other hand, has a crush on her employer Tim who has hired her to look after his four-year-old daughter. They do start up a relationship but once his wife returns, Kat can’t continue. Daisy and her bond over their relationship issues.

Their friend Jojo has her own relationship problems. She wants to have sex with her boyfriend but he refuses to before they’re married. He ends up breaking up with her thinking she is only after him for sex. *eye roll*

While all this is going on, the restaurant is visited by a famous food critic and when he gives them a positive review, their phones start ringing off the hook. I imagine this is what happens when a restaurant is on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

The film ends with the three girls in some form of a relationship and living happily ever after. If you’re looking for an 80s movie about love and friendship, Mystic Pizza is where it’s at! Check it out on Netflix.
