32. The Old Guard

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. The Old Guard? That’s not a romance! Well, you’re wrong. I have three words for you: Nicky and Joe. Their relationship and the way they fight for each other after so many years is the definition of romance. We should all be so lucky! And what better way to spend Valentine’s Day than by watching a couple that is the example all other couples should imitate?

The Old Guard, based on the comic book of the same name, stars Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Martinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harry Melling, and Veronica Ngo and is possibly one of Netflix’s best (romance) films ever.

The film starts with Andy and her team of (sort of) immortal fighters working together to save a group of kidnapped girls in South Sudan. But the mission turns out to be a setup and when they come back to life after being shot, they realize they were filmed.

Now after the people who set them up, they also realize that these people want to do experiments on them to find out what makes them heal so fast and live forever.

Along the way to get their revenge, they find another person like them. Someone who is also almost immortal. Nile is a soldier in the Middle East and when she is stabbed, she turns out to be completely fine.  There’s not even a scar. While she’s unconscious, she has strange dreams that turn out to be connections to her fellow immortals.

Andy picks her up from her base (or I guess she kind of kidnaps her) and takes her to meet the guys and together (after a few hiccups), they go to get their revenge against the people trying to hurt them.

Along the way, Nicky and Joe protect each other and give romantic speeches which makes this one of the most romantic movies to ever exist. I will not be taking questions. Just go watch it on Netflix!
