17. Silver Linings Playbook

Not all relationships are the same. Some are quirkier than others and quirky is definitely one way you could describe the relationship between Pat and Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook. As soon as they meet at dinner at a mutual friend’s house and exchange some recommendations on which antipsychotic meds are best, it’s clear they are one of a kind and perfect for each other whether they believe it or not.

The film, starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher, and Julia Stiles, starts with Pat coming home after getting out of treatment at a mental health facility. He wants to immediately reconcile with his wife, but she’s not interested. While he tries to see the bright side of things, he experiences anxiety attacks that cause him to have multiple angry outbursts.

After the dinner meet-cute where Tiffany agrees to give Pat’s ex a letter for him in return for being her dance partner in a competition she’s entered in, sparks fly. They begin practicing and get closer each time, but Pat tries to push down his feelings for her. He’s only doing the competition so perhaps his wife will see he has changed.

But when the time comes to be in the competition, Pat is reluctant. Luckily, Tiffany is a little bit conniving and persuades his parents to help her get him there. Things don’t go as planned but when they get on the dance floor, it’s amazing. Unfortunately, Tiffany sees Pat talking to his ex after the dance and leaves immediately.

Pat goes after her and they finally confess their feelings for each other. They may not be what you think of when you think of a classic romance, but in real life, relationships don’t actually look like fairytales. They look much more like Pat and Tiffany.

If you missed seeing this Oscar-winning film when it was first out, now’s the time to watch it on Netflix!
