Romantic teen movies and shows on Netflix

Happy Valentine’s Week, Netflix Lifers! It’s time to get our festive hearts fluttering with stories full of love and romance. We’ve already compiled a list of 50 romance movies for your viewing pleasure, but we also wanted to provide you with some romantic teen movies and shows.

Valentine’s Day is for all ages and as much as we enjoy revisiting classic romcoms from the ’90s and ’00s, Netflix has been breathing life back in the genre for their teen audience. While there’s an argument to be made about “teen content” being a little less sixteen candles and a little more touch me, especially on Netflix, it’s also true that the teen rom-com is an important subcategory of a well-loved genre.

Romance can be fraught at any age. It can also be wonderful, formative, and make you work to be a better person. We enjoy romances like anybody else interested in watching people fall in love, overcome personal struggles, and decide what’s best for them. But we like to laugh as well and, while we respect romantic tearjerkers and sweeping dramatic romances, the rom-com is the kind of lighthearted fun a movie marathon or binge watch is made for.

So whether you’re jumping on a Netflix Party with friends or catching some time with your significant other, here are 15 rom-com teen movies and shows to enjoy together. We’ve got fake dating, personal discoveries, a resurrection, love at first sight, enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance, secret admirers, coming-of-age love stories, and online romance.

Let’s dive in, starting with Alex Strangelove!

Teen movies on Netflix: Alex Strangelove

Rating TV-MA

Alex (Daniel Doheny) and Claire (Madeline Weinstein) have been best friends for years. They’re so close that it’s assumed that they’re an inevitable couple, a slow burn romance expedited by a health crisis in Claire’s family. Alex, however, starts getting confused when he meets Elliot (Antonio Marziale) at a party. Elliot is funny and clearly into him prompting Alex to question his own sexuality.

He and Claire are supposed to be making plans about their future and their relationship, planning even to sleep together for the first time, but there are nagging questions at the forefront of Alex’s mind: Am I attracted to boys? Do I even like girls?

There’s a difference between being comfortable with someone, even loving them, and being interested in them. Alex’s timing couldn’t be worse but feelings are messy and so is self-discovery.

Alex Strangelove deals with issues of sexual exploration, homophobia, and bullying. The film contains strong sexual content and language as well as drug/alcohol use and brief nudity.
