It doesn’t always work out that adaptations of good books turn into equally good (or better) TV shows or movies. However, once in a while creative forces conspire and conjure up winners. Netflix certainly seems to have an affinity for harnessing such magic.

We’ve seen some really good Netflix movies and Netflix shows based on books recently, especially those of the romantic genre.

We shared four romantic Netflix shows and four Netflix movies (eight total) that are based on romantic books.

Romantic Netflix shows: Bridgerton

Bridgerton is one of the best period romantic dramas on Netflix because it’s got it all: a great storyline, a superb cast, lavish costumes, and it was all inspired by a series of books by the same name written by Julia Quinn.

Season 1 is based on the first book in the series, The Duke and I. It’s set in Regency-era London at the start of the ton’s season. Daphne Bridgerton, the Bridgerton family’s eldest daughter, is presented at court, where she wows the queen. But then her brother interferes, and well, she finds herself striking a bargain with the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset, that results in not only a true friendship but also a true love.

Romantic Netflix shows: Sweet Magnolias

Sweet Magnolias follows the lives of three South Carolina women, Maddie, Dana Sue and Hester, who have been friends since high school. It’s based on a series of books by the same name written by Sherryl Woods.

The women help each other navigate life’s ups, downs, changes and challenges, including career, marriage and childrearing issues. It’s full of feel-good drama, but the season 1 cliffhanger ending has fans anxiously waiting for season 2 to start filming so they can hurry up and get some answers!
