Today, the 93rd Academy Awards announced their nomination shortlists for a bunch of categories, which means it’s time for another Netflix Life Oscars update!

Last time, we analyzed the probable nominees for Best Picture, Director, Animated Feature, and Documentary Feature.

The latter category whittled down its pool of eligible nominees to 15, with a few other categories following suit to 10 or 15 entries.

Below, we’ll look at the Netflix movies included on each category’s shortlist, as well as one other notable contender not on Netflix.

2021 Best Documentary Feature contenders on Netflix

As mentioned in our first post, Netflix had a lot of contenders this year going into the shortlist, including Dick Johnson is DeadCrip Camp: A Disability Revolution, and The Social Dilemma. The first two made it onto the shortlist, as well as My Octopus Teacher. The doc I also gave a shout out to last time on Amazon Prime, Time, received a shortlist spot as well.

2021 Best International Feature contenders on Netflix

Taiwan’s A Sun and Mexico’s I’m No Longer Here are the shortlisted international features currently on Netflix. Another to keep eyes on is frontrunner Another Round from Denmark starring Mads Mikkelsen.

2021 Best Original Score contenders on Netflix

The scores for Da 5 Bloods (Terence Blanchard), Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (John Debney), The Life Ahead (Gabriel Yared)Mank (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), The Midnight Sky (Alexandre Desplat), and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Daniel Pemberton) were all featured on the shortlist for Best Original Score. Also featured was the wonderfully delicate, jazzy score of the Pixar hit Soul (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste).

2021 Best Original Song contenders on Netflix

“Husavik” from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, “Never Break” from Giving Voice, “Make It Work” from Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, “lo Sì (Seen)” from The Life Ahead, and “Hear My Voice” from The Trial of the Chicago 7 were all shortlisted. An Oscars ceremony with an at-home performance of “Wuhan Flu” from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm would be outstanding.

2021 Best Animated Short contenders on Netflix

If Anything Happens I Love You was shortlisted for Best Animated Short. Its simple, evocative animation style is stark and powerful. Look out for Pixar to step up in this category with their shorts Burrow and Out as well.

2021 Best Documentary Short contenders on Netflix

What a showing for Netflix here! A Love Song for LatashaThe Speed Cubers, and What Would Sophia Loren Do? all made it to the shortlist. It’s a tough watch, but one other I’d recommend is Abortion Helpline, This Is Lisa, on Vimeo for free (ostensibly for a limited time).

2021 Best Live Action Short contenders on Netflix

I couldn’t find any of the Live Action Short contenders on Netflix, but they’re usually hard to come by in any Oscars season. A couple that sparked my eye were Pedro Almodóvar’s Tilda Swinton-starring The Human Voice and Erenik Beqiri’s The Van, the latter of which is on Amazon Prime now.

2021 Best Makeup and Hairstyling contenders on Netflix

Hillbilly Elegy, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Mank all made this shortlist. This also might be one of the only categories in which the undersung Anya Taylor-Joy starring Emma. gets nominated.

2021 Best Visual Effects contenders on Netflix

The teams from Mank and The Midnight Sky scored places on this shortlist. Keep tabs on Tenet as well – the Academy loves Nolan when it comes to effects and editing.

Here’s the link to the complete shortlists! What do you hope gets nominated in these categories?
