I wasn’t even finished with the first episode when my heart declared, “Sanditon! Where have you been all my life? You are now my favorite Jane Austen adaptation ever!”

It’s great because I no longer have to feel guilty about it being a toss-up between Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. There’s now a clear winner for my affections.

If I had you at “Jane Austen” and you love Netflix originals like Bridgerton, but you don’t know about Sanditon yet —or maybe you do but are trying to figure out where to watch it— you may be wondering, “Yes, but get to the good part. Is Sanditon on Netflix?”

Sadly, no, you can’t watch Sanditon on Netflix.

Where to watch Sanditon

You can watch the series if you have a PBS Passport account. On Amazon Video, you can either purchase the episodes individually or buy the entire season. Or, if you subscribe to the PBS Masterpiece channel via Prime, you can also watch that way. You can also purchase the series on YouTube.

Please don’t ask me to decide if I like Bridgerton better than Sanditon. Bridgerton is not based on a Jane Austen novel but has many Austen-esque qualities. It’s also set in the same period as Sanditon and really is a must-stream if you’re a Jane Austen fan.

But let’s take a gander at what Sanditon is about.

What is Sanditon about?

The Regency-era historical drama is based on Jane Austen’s final, but unfinished, novel of the same name. The eight-episode series first premiered on ITV in the U.K. in 2019. It was introduced to American audiences in 2020 by way of PBS’s Masterpiece programming.

Sanditon is the name of the seaside village that Mr. Tom Parker is trying to develop into a fashionable spa resort. On the way to find a doctor, Mr. Parker and his wife, Mary, have a carriage accident and that’s how they meet Charlotte Heywood, who comes to assist them.

Impressed by her kindness and wanting to repay it, they offer to host her in their home at Sanditon. They not only welcome her into their family as one of their own, but they also welcome her ideas and suggestions for ways to improve the resort and its activities.

Although, I should say not everyone welcomes her. Charlotte clashes with Sidney Parker, one of Tom’s siblings and closest advisors. In classic Austen style, Charlotte and Sidney discover they judged one another too hastily, especially when they both recognize it’s not dislike they feel for each other but the stirrings of love.

However, also in true Austen-esque form, Sidney’s heart is not his to freely give. Especially when Tom’s irresponsible ways with money leave the family relying on Sidney to marry his first love, now a wealthy widower, to bail them out of debt.

Miss Georgiana Lambe, a black heiress from the West Indies who’s also Sidney Parker’s charge, is the only black character to appear in any of Austen’s works.

Unlike Bridgerton, however, Sanditon does confront the harsh realities of prejudice and slavery.

But there is also plenty of love and romance, mixed with a touch of comedy. Will Charlotte actually find love with the young Mr. Stringer, who also fancies her? Which ungrateful, conniving relative will win Lady Denham’s favor and inheritance: Clara Brereton, or stepsiblings Esther and Edward Denham? Or will Lord Babington thaw Esther’s cold heart and rescue her from Edward’s cruel ways?

No spoilers here, but I will warn you that there is only one season of Sanditon so far and you will scream in frustration where it ends.

Is Sanditon season 2 happening?

There better be!

I Heart British TV reported that Sanditon season 2’s status was updated earlier this year to “pre-production” with filming set to begin in Summer 2021. Thank goodness! Let’s hope that happens because, well…I can’t say and spoil it, but there’s a major cliffhanger this romance junkie needs an answer to!
