The Dig is coming to Netflix tonight! So let’s get ready for this cinematic experience while we’ve got a minute.
Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, and Lily James star in this 2021 historical drama based on the John Preston book by the same name. The film made its theater debut on January 15, 2021, and so far it’s been pretty well-received.
A critical review from Rotten Tomatoes calls The Dig “an intimate film” which moves at “the deliberate, careful pace of an excavation” and uncovers “a few gems” as the visually stunning and notably unique story unfolds.
And for those unfamiliar, here’s the premise.
What is The Dig about?
Directed by Simon Stone, The Dig reimagines the historic events that transpired during the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo. However, this reimagined true story looks to be incredibly layered and moving. As noted by CNN, screenwriter Moira Buffini has said The Dig is about “time and the fragility of our existence” and ultimately, “the brevity of life and what endures — what we leave behind us.”
In The Dig, Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) and his team of archeologists uncover a wooden ship from the Dark Ages, among some other unexpected ancient discoveries, while digging beneath the burial grounds of a woman named Edith Pretty’s (Carey Mulligan) sprawling estate.
After making a truly historic discovery, “the echoes of Britain’s past resonate in the face of its uncertain future,” says Netflix.
Netflix describes the plot as:
"On the eve of World War II, a British widow hires a self-taught archaeologist to dig up mysterious formations on her land, leading to a staggering find."
