Fairy season is upon us with the debut of Fate: The Winx Saga on Netflix.

The series takes viewers to Alfea College, a magical institute where fairies and specialists are trained to protect the eight realms from those who seek to upset the peace they’ve had since the defeat of the Burned Ones.

But when Bloom Peters arrives on campus the delicate balance between good and evil begins to shift as a great enemy stirs, and she learns there’s more to her origins than she was led to believe.

While the series was adapted from a children’s cartoon that prioritizes friendship, this new iteration incorporates a chosen one narrative that’s centered on uncovering well hidden and ruinous secrets.

Fans of Fate: The Winx Saga in search of shows similar to the dark fantasy will, unfortunately, have to contend with settling for series that fall under the supernatural umbrella. At the moment, the show is one of less than a handful of fairy centered dramas outside of young adult books by Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, and Melissa Marr.
