In case you weren’t aware, the past year has changed a lot of things we’re used to. One of the lowest changes on the totem pole of changes brought to you by 2020 is the awards season rollout. Since the annual gauntlet in film has been pushed back, so has the eligibility period for movies hoping to snag a nomination in this very untraditional release era. Being so, we’ll be getting awards season entries well into February, including the new Netflix original movie The Dig starring heavyweight performers Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James.

Based on the historical novel of the same name by John Preston, The Dig takes place just as World War II looms overheard. Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan), a wealthy widow, calls on an amateur archaeologist to excavate the land on her property, which unearths the discovery of the Sutton Hoo burial site. The historic finding brings Britain’s past to the surface just as it enters a period of uncertainty for the future ahead. The Dig comes from director Simon Stone, who directed the 2015 Australian film The Daughter. More than anything, we’re looking forward to some excellent performances in one of the most anticipated new Netflix original films of 2021.
