Don’t get this one confused with the forthcoming live-action adaptation of Pinocchio starring Tom Hanks coming to Disney+ in the near to distant future. Netflix’s upcoming dark reimagining of Pinocchio isn’t connected to Disney and might not be an entirely family-friendly musical romp (though time will eventually tell). This year, we’re in for a new rendition of Pinocchio from the mind of Academy Award-winning visionary Guillermo del Toro. It will get the internet — and awards season circuit — chattering about the world’s most famous marionette.

Based on the classic Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, as re-illustrated by Gris Grimly in 2002, Pinocchio presents a darker representation of the children’s fairy tale we all know and have grown up loving. The animated film centers on a wooden puppet, whose nose grows when he tells a lie, as he later transforms into a real, living boy. Pinocchio comes to life in 1930s Fascist Italy and isn’t a particularly nice boy. Guillermo del Toro makes his animated film debut with Pinocchio, and it’s sure to make a splash sizable splash in 2021 — that’s no lie.
