5 Netflix movies and shows to watch if you like Night Stalker
5 movies and shows to watch if you binged Night Stalker
Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer wasn’t listed as one of the five good Netflix shows to watch in January 2021 for no reason. Like its name suggests, it made a stealthy and quiet debut among Netflix’s new releases on Jan. 13.
Whether you’re an avid true crime fan who knew it was coming and set a release reminder, or you happened to stumble upon it and gobbled it up, you may be left hungering for more. But what to watch?
Here are suggestions for five other engrossing true crime docuseries, movies and dramas to tantalize your peepers with. Some are specific to Night Stalker Richard Ramirez. One is a similar examination of another serial killer case. The rest are shows and series that came to mind as I watched Night Stalker.
1. The Ripper
If you like investigative docuseries that focus less on the killer and more on the detectives involved in catching him and the process they used to do that, check out The Ripper. Or, in this case, some might argue the processes that weren’t used and let this killer escape justice for years. Like Night Stalker, it’s a four-episode limited series too.
And don’t let the name fool you. It’s not about Jack the Ripper, but rather the Yorkshire Ripper. They may share a similar moniker but there are plenty of differences between them.
2. Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes
If you want to hear from a serial killer himself, this chilling docuseries includes audio recordings made on death row with serial killer Ted Bundy.
3. Mindhunter
Mindhunter is a drama based on a nonfiction book by former FBI special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, both of whom worked in the Serial Crime Unit. Douglas was involved in coining the term “serial killers” and was also instrumental in developing techniques to profile and identify them.
This series follows fictional FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench in the early days of creating the Serial Crime Unit. Sadly, there are only two seasons of the show. Mindhunter was among the canceled casualties of 2020.
4. American Horror Story: 1984
I couldn’t help but think of AHS: 1984 as I watched Night Stalker. Richard Ramirez factors heavily into the ninth season of the American Horror Story franchise, as the writers took some liberties with the real-life killer and injected him as a character in this season.
5. The Confession Killer
This five-episode limited series examines Henry Lee Lucas and his confession to hundreds of unsolved murders. Was he telling the truth, or does DNA testing reveal him as a liar?
Collider might’ve summed it up best when they said that this series “meanders in redundancy.” However, they also mirrored the same sentiments as other outlets about what makes it so binge-able.
