Who is Kumiko in Cobra Kai season 3?
In Cobra Kai season 3, Daniel reunites with his love interest, Kumiko, from The Karate Kid Part II.
Thanks to the cliffhanger ending in season 2, everyone was wondering if Elisabeth Shue would reprise her role as Ali in season 3. But what about his other love interest? Whatever happened to Kumiko from The Karate Kid Part II? We find out in Cobra Kai season 3.
It’s a sweet reunion. Totally platonic. As we know, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) is happily married to Amanda (Courtney Henggeler).
It’s also not like he sought her out. He comes across her when he finds himself back in Japan to meet with Doyona Industries after his business competitor convinces the automaker to cut their ties with Daniel’s dealership, LaRusso Auto.
Doyona respectfully turns down Daniel’s request to reconsider their position. Disheartened, Daniel takes a trip to Okinawa to pay Tomi Village, Mr. Miyagi’s hometown, a visit. He finds it’s changed dramatically since the last time he saw it, and amazingly he happens to spot Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita), his sweetheart from the first time he was there.
In The Karate Kid Part II, Mr. Miyagi’s father dies. Daniel accompanies him to Japan and learns that just like Daniel had a rival in Johnny for Ali’s heart, Mr. Miyagi experienced the same thing in his youth. Except it was a rivalry with his best friend, Sato.
Mr. Miyagi was in love was Yukie. Yukie and Sato’s parents had arranged for them to marry, but she didn’t want to because she loved Mr. Miyagi.
Humiliated, Sato challenged Miyagi to a fight to the death, and that’s why Mr. Miyagi left Japan. He didn’t want to fight his best friend.
But he never stopped loving Yukie, who he reconnected with on his visit home. That’s how Daniel met her beautiful niece, Kumiko.
In Cobra Kai season 3, Kumiko helps Chozen (Daniel’s rival in The Karate Kid Part II) and Daniel make peace, but she also reunites Daniel with Yuna, the little girl he saved during the typhoon all those years ago. Yuna is now Vice President of Sales for Doyona and she returns the life-saving favor by letting Daniel’s dealership keep its contract with the car dealership.
The return to Japan and the seamless storyline is why Cobra Kai is such a fun series overall, and why Cobra Kai season 3 is another must-watch season for The Karate Kid fans. It’s one of the Netflix new releases now streaming.
Cobra Kai season 4 is happening at Netflix!
