Penguin Bloom is just one of the must-see movies on Netflix in January 2021

The new year is here. It’s time to turn our backs on 2020 and focus on the good 2021 can bring us. There are certainly plenty of must-see movies on Netflix throughout January 2021 to focus on.

There isn’t as much in January as we usually see, especially when it comes to Netflix originals. We’re starting to see the knock-on effect of the struggles of filming during the pandemic on streaming services, which had plenty to share in the months when broadcast networks were struggling.

That doesn’t stop Netflix from having some excellent movies. Here are the five must-see movies on Netflix this month.

Penguin Bloom

You’ll have to wait until the end of the month, but it is going to be worth that wait. Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln star in Penguin Bloom. It focuses on a woman who is paralyzed from the waist down after an accident.

At first, it looks like the family will break apart from the accident. However, a bird that is injured and can’t fly teaches the family how to heal. It’s an inspirational movie that you just can’t afford to miss. It’s also based on a true story, which gives it that little extra heart.

Penguin Bloom streams on Netflix on Jan. 27.

The Dig

Lily James, Carey Mulligan, and Ralph Fiennes star in The Dig, which is based on a true story. There are a few must-see movies on Netflix this month based on true stories.

An excavator and his team find the remains of a wooden ship from the Dark Ages while they’re digging up a burial ground on a woman’s estate. It turns into a project they never imagined, and it’s now known as the discovery of the Sutton Hoo burial ground.

Filming took place close to the original excavation grounds. You can watch the movie on Jan. 29.

Outside the Wire

Next up is the most talked-about Netflix movie during the month. Outside the Wire stars Anthony Mackie as an android officer working with a drone pilot to stop a catastrophe that could bring an end to the world.

It comes from the minds behind The Old Guard and Extraction. If you loved those two movies, there’s no reason not to give this one a chance.

Watch Outside the Wire on Netflix on Jan. 15.

Charming

This animated movie has been a long time coming, but Charming is finally coming to Netflix in January 2021. Wilmer Valderrama stars as the titular character, a young prince who needs to find his true love. G.E.M., Ashley Tisdale, and Avril Lavinge all voice the women in his life, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Snow White respectively.

They all learn they’re engaged to the same man. Naturally, they don’t take it all that well. Do they turn on each other or on their prince? And can Prince Charming figure out who his true love is before his time runs out?

It’s going to be something to watch with the kids when it’s released on Jan. 8.

Fatima

Finally, it’s time for the third movie based on a true story. This one is set in the days of World War I, and offers a tale of faith and love. Three Portuguese children stand strong against their doubting families and an aggressive government when they see visions of the Virgin Mary.

Can they follow through with the wishes of their apparitions? Will they give into the government officials trying to silence them? Are the apparitions even really there? This is certainly a movie that will raise a lot of questions in a good way.

Check out Fatima on Netflix on Jan. 31.
