Shows in danger of being canceled in 2021
As television fans, there is nothing we hate more than the word canceled especially when it’s used in the same sentence as our favorite shows. When you invest in a show, you always hope for more seasons and that when the time comes for the show to end there is at least a chance for the show to end on its own term with a proper final season to tie up loose ends.
In a normal year, the shows in danger of cancellation typically are ones struggling with ratings. However, the 2020-21 season has been far from usual.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, production on many shows has been delayed which proved to be an obstacle too great for some series to overcome leading to shocking cancellations and even a few renewal reversals. Because of this, the list of shows in danger of being shown the door in 2021 is greater than usual and features a mix of both new and veteran series.
While certain networks are more likely to give struggling shows the chance to rebound and veteran series the chance to end with proper closure, the unfortunate truth is the majority of shows in danger typically aren’t able to cheat death.
As we enter the new year, there are dozens of Netflix shows in danger of being canceled (both originals and Netflix streaming favorites), including these 31 Netflix shows whose fate remains unclear.
Grey’s Anatomy
Network: ABC
Number of Seasons: 17
Why We’re Concerned: While it’s clear ABC would love to keep the show going — as they’ve made clear time and time again — they’ll only be able to do so as long as both Ellen Pompeo and Shonda Rhimes want to continue with the show. As Pompeo told Variety, “This is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year. But it could very well could be.”
Final Verdict: Despite its status as ABC’s longest-running primetime drama, Grey’s Anatomy continues to dominate in the ratings. Through the first weeks of the 2020-21 season, Grey’s Anatomy ranks not only as ABC’s highest-rated series but also as its most-watched series. Clearly, fans still can’t get enough of the medical series which should be a no-brainer for renewal.
Although Pompeo could very well make the decision not to ink a new deal, we have a feeling Grey’s will be back for at least one more season.
