Scripted narratives are all well and good, but sometimes people need a dose of reality in their daily streaming rituals, and nothing accomplishes that better than getting completely enthralled by a game-changing and eye-opening documentary. There are so many of these riveting nonfiction features available on the popular streaming service Netflix that take on a bunch of intriguing ordeals and issues. One title that stands out above the rest as one people may not have seen in 2020 but absolutely should have is the winner of the 2020 Critics Choice Documentary Awards for Most Compelling Living Subject and Best Sports Documentary called Athlete A.

The documentary film Athlete A is directed by Bonni Chen and Jon Shenk and follows the team of journalists from The Indianapolis Star as they broke the shocking story of the horrific acts of doctor Larry Nassar assaulting young female gymnasts. The doc features archive footage and chilling interviews from the victims, including Maggie Nichols, the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships gold medal recipient. There is no denying this film is a necessary watch.
