4. The Life Ahead

Netflix has been known to put out some truly amazing cinematic endeavors, and some of those absolutely stunning titles get missed by subscribers for a number of unfortunate reasons. One of which that may have gone under the radar for most is The Life Ahead starring the iconic and legendary actress Sophia Loren. At age 86, the magnetic performer hasn’t lost her touch at all and still contains an untouchable amount of star power. The motion picture is directed by her son Edoardo Ponti and is based on the novel The Life Before Us written by Romain Grey. It’s also based on the 1977 film version of the novel directed by Moshe Mizrahi.

The Life Ahead has Loren playing the part of Madame Rosa, a former prostitute and Holocaust survivor who provides childcare for the children of working women. When a 12-year-old Senegalese street kid robs her, she reluctantly takes him in, and the two develop a deep bond. Rosa tries to help him find his way in life, resulting in a truly gripping and powerful tale that will almost assuredly garner significant awards attention. The gorgeously realized Italian drama film is absolutely one everyone should see if they missed it when it first came out.
